Teaching, Learning and Assessing – Every Lesson, Every Day
The Ruhan DD-PP-EE Pedagogical Model
The DD-PP-EE model integrates pedagogy with curriculum and assessment, and extends learning beyond the allocated lesson time for each subject. Designed to fully equip students with subject knowledge, the DD-PP-EE ensures that they learn progressively, consistently and cumulatively throughout their time at Ruhan Nexus, thereby leaving nothing to chance in the school and national examinations.
DD – Download & Discuss (approx. the 1st one-third of a lesson)
The teacher delivers the learning content in a clear and detailed manner, with constant reference to the textbook (where applicable) and class notes. When sufficient information has been downloaded at certain junctures, the teacher opens up the lesson to a whole-class discussion, where students are assessed on their capacities for notetaking, inquiry and participation. The teacher facilitates the discussion, generates more learning points for future lessons, and creates a bigger picture of the topic, thereby drawing together the elements of Significance, Relevance and Transferability (SRT) at this stage of student learning.
PP – Practise & Personalise (approx. the 2nd third of the same lesson)
With new understanding of the topic in mind, students begin to practise the questions given in their class notes. This stage gives them the opportunity to apply their initial knowledge of the topic through crafting out answers to questions arranged in order of difficulty. At this stage, students will only be assessed on their level of learning engagement – their motivation, will and determination, not how fast or slow they are in grasping concepts. No one falls through the cracks – the teacher goes around the class and provides personalised coaching tailored to the specific learning needs of the student, thus giving him or her the knowledge and confidence to explore deeply into the topic.
EE – Enhance & Equip (the last third of the same lesson)
Back at the whiteboard, the teacher explains and models the solution to questions that most students had problems with, and enhances their understanding using probing questions. At this stage, students are observed and assessed on their levels of focus, notetaking and participation. The teacher then responds to queries from students for the rest of the lesson, and reminds them to finish up all remaining questions as homework and file up the answers and class notes in their subject portfolio. Students are expected to complete all questions for a particular lesson within a week, and use their textbook and portfolio to keep themselves well-equipped for their assessment revision. If they run into problems with any concept or question, they should contact the teacher for immediate assistance. Before starting to attempt their written assessment for each subject, students shall submit their portfolio as the formative assessment for that subject. The teacher will assess the portfolio in terms of the quantity and quality of answers presented in it.
