The Ruhan Emblem

Ruhan Nexus is set up with the strong objective of inculcating children and youths with a range of values through the contexts of learning and growing. Each child or youth who comes under the wings of Ruhan will be imparted with these values through its design and delivery of subject and course curriculums, whenever and wherever applicable. It takes a village to raise a child – these values will form the core of what we teach and how we teach it, so that throughout his or her formative years at Ruhan, the values will be built progressively into the cognitive and philosophical machinery of our student, thereby readying him or her for self, society and humanity.

Water

A symbol of Confucian philosophies, water sustains life and flows on indefinitely. Water in the Ruhan Emblem signifies the essential and continuous roles of Education in one’s life journey.

Bridge

The creation, spread and application of knowledge gives rise to invention and progressively, great civilisations. The bridge is a main invention of Han Chinese that has benefitted humanity for many centuries. In the Ruhan Emblem, it symbolises the connection between knowledge and the future opportunities of self and society.

Fireworks

Fireworks are another invention of Han Chinese that have been widely adopted and adapted around the world. Fluorescing radially above the bridge in the Ruhan Emblem, they signify celebration, achievement, and the joys of learning to be shared by all of humanity.

The Ruhan Motto

Nutrire In Aeternum [To Nurture Eternally] 培 苗 培 青   育 人 育 恒

In its stride towards leaving a strong legacy in Education, the Ruhan Nexus first focuses on, and caters to, the learning needs of each and every student under its wings. Student-centrism is our unrelenting mantra, which is driven by genuine and profound care for the children and youth in our society. Ruhan shall endeavour to nurture its students using evidence-based methodologies so that the developmental benefits are transferable well into adulthood. Such a success makes its educational approaches and methods gain traction socially when more schools, parents and students begin to subscribe to them. Generation after generation, these approaches and methods are distilled into robust educational beliefs in societies around the globe, thus withstanding the test of time and space. This is Ruhan: a space for all-rounders, a philosophy for humanity, a vision larger than life – all in the true spirit of Education.

The Ruhan Poem

Ruhan [儒汉]

Delineating the thoughts involved in the naming of Ruhan, this poem consists entirely of fragments scattered over 4 short lines in a single verse. The poem’s simplicity is precisely where its depth lies. The thinker alluded to in line 1 is the Chinese philosopher Confucius (551-479 BCE) who lived during the Spring and Autumn era in the present Shandong Province of China. Over the millennia, his thoughts and sayings have been recorded and expounded by disciples, scholars and academics in dozens of anthologies and compendiums. This body of knowledge acted as a beacon for Han Chinese in many aspects of life and living, and of politics, society and education. Confucianism became integral to the flourishing of the Chinese civilisation, and from there, it spread to other countries, particularly in East Asia, where its influence is still deeply felt in the present day. Confucianism promulgates that Education be at the forefront of social growth, where the cultured mind directs the individual to work from the personal level, and then outwards, to eventually benefit the whole of humanity. Today, Confucian philosophies and ideologies have inspired many people and organisations, especially educational setups such as Ruhan Nexus. The smooth-funnel formatting of the poem is purposeful as it signifies the perennial flow of Confucianist thought from the past to the present, and then to the future.

The Naming of “Ruhan Nexus for Tuition and Enrichment” (儒汉辅艺学堂)

” (Rú) represents Confucianism – a philosophy established by Confucius during the Spring and Autumn period that laid the foundation for ancient Chinese civilisation and inspired the development of other Asian societies. Confucian principles closely tied to Education – such as “To build a nation and lead its people, teaching must come first”, “Cultivate virtue to excel in the arts”, and “Learn tirelessly, teach without weariness” – serve as the driving force for Ruhan Nexus’s mission to educate and nurture students.

” (Hàn) symbolises the “Han culture” – a reflection of Ruhan’s educational aspirations for its students. Students are encouraged to embody the spirit of their cultural heritage: a sincere love for learning, intellectual enlightenment, and character building. This approach fosters the holistic development of their moral, intellectual, physical, social, and aesthetic potential while promoting the true essence of Education. Learning should enrich one’s emotional and inner world, not merely be a means for future material gain. Only by embracing this deeper purpose can students achieve the transformative power of Education.

” (Fǔ) means “guidance” – a reference to the tuition and after-school programmes Ruhan Nexus offers. These programmes aim to enhance students’ understanding of mainstream school subjects while deepening their passion for learning.

” (Yì) refers to “skills and arts”. In Confucian thought, ancient scholars were expected to master the “Six Arts”, which have been redefined for modern times. Ruhan Nexus’s enrichment courses are designed to provide students with a well-rounded Education, thus fostering their development in a variety of academic and life skills.

学堂” (Xué Táng). Traditionally a term for private schools or learning spaces in Chinese culture, the term “学堂” is still affectionately used by Fujian and Minnan communities to refer to schools. Despite modern advancements in Education, this term embodies respect for learning spaces. Childhood memories of parents advising their children in Minnan dialect to “listen to the teacher and focus during lessons” reflect the enduring value placed on Education.

In the past, students took immense pride in the opportunity to attend school, often wearing crisp uniforms and approaching learning with enthusiasm, regardless of their school’s simplicity in physical layout or lesson delivery. The collective spirit in classrooms, where students earnestly read aloud together, epitomised a genuine love for learning.

Today, the establishment of “儒汉辅艺学堂” signifies the preservation of this pure-hearted commitment to Education. It emphasises that true educational excellence lies not in outward appearances but in the passion and dedication of teachers and students. No matter how much Ruhan Nexus grows, it will always be known as a “学堂” – a humble yet profound space for learning filled with boundless enthusiasm and purpose.
