Ruhan Ideology for Education

Through various learning modes, the human brain is highly capable of forming neural circuitry and networks from birth to late adolescence, also known as neuroplasticity. This period of rapid growth presents the student with crucial windows of opportunity to acquire and consolidate fundamental soft skills, which will distil into deep knowledge in adulthood with continuous reflection and learning. The Ruhan Nexus respects and adopts this developmental life cycle and gives your child the very best foundation for life through the expert design and delivery of curriculum and pedagogy in tuition, enrichment and after-school care. An ardent proponent of educational research, Ruhan carefully utilises every single learning window from N2 to J2 and gives your child the strongest possible head start on his or her future journey in life.

Morality, Civics and Character

Children are actively constructing moral and ethical philosophies as part of a natural, developmental process in their intellectual faculties. Although most of us do see the importance of a primary-school curriculum in morality and civics, we fail to afford ample recognition to its key roles in the cognitive growth of our children. At Ruhan Nexus, Morality, Civics and Character (MCC) are taught explicitly as an integral part of its core subjects and enrichment courses, especially in relation to the Chinese Language. Ruhan Nexus taps the enormous wealth of moral and ethical knowledge in Chinese history and civilisation, and weaves such cultural essences into the acquisition and extension of language skills in the classroom. For secondary and junior college students, whose higher-order thinking skills are fast developing, the teaching of MCC adopts a meta-cognitive mode of deep reflection and meaningful connection in the Literary Arts. In addition, MCC can, and should be, assessed. Apart from behavioural characteristics, Ruhan Nexus assesses the quality of student responses in the thinking and application of moral tenets and philosophical concepts. This way, students integrate MCC successfully into their intellect and cognition, making themselves truly well-schooled and at the same time, quality individuals of society.

Bilingualism

Ruhan Nexus places enormous emphasis on Bilingualism in children and youths. From birth to middle primary, children are at the peak of “imitating” spoken and written language, so we ensure they are schooled in the accurate use of English and Chinese in our classrooms. From pubescence to senior adolescence, our youths innately use meta-cognitive approaches to enhance their language proficiency. At this juncture, Ruhan Nexus teaches Literature in both languages to its students, ensuring they are educated in the depths and complexities of English and Chinese through discourse analysis, which will progress into evaluating, critiquing and creating. It should be borne in mind that whilst the macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are essential to language acquisition, they are inadequate for our youths to master a language, especially if it is their first language. We cannot leave our youths in a state where there is no one language that they can call their first. This is especially so when we have not tapped their meta-cognitive language abilities fully. Ruhan Nexus strives to do the opposite by teaching our youths to be proficient in both English and mother-tongue Chinese – to be bilingual when young, so that functional Biculturalism will be within their reach in adulthood.
